Balloon FAQ and General Information

What size straw should I use on a 9" foil?
We recommends that you use a 16" or 24" straw.

Are 18", oversized or helium shaped foil balloons self-sealing?
Yes. When an 18", oversized or helium shaped foil is inflated to the correct size, the pressure of the helium inside the balloon closes the valve. If the ribbon is attached below the inflation point, foil balloons can be re-inflated.

How do you seal an air-filled micro or mini foil?
To seal a mini or micro foil balloon, a heat sealer is required. BWI carries 4" heat sealers. After inflating the foil balloon, lay the neck flat and press the arm of the heating element down firmly on the neck. Make sure the light is on and hold for approximately three seconds.

What kind of clip should I use?
For 11" latex balloons, use small clips; for larger latex balloons, use jumbo clips. Clips are not recommended for use on foil balloons.  (See page 171 of BWI's Balloon Solutions Catalog for clip information)

What is the standard ribbon size?
3/16" is the standard ribbon size, but some people prefer the wider 3/8" ribbon. Sizes and the full color line of ribbon are shown on pages 164-165 of BWI's Balloon Solutions Catalog.

Why do I need a special inflator for my foils?
The opening in the neck of a foil balloon requires a special tip that allows the foil balloon to be inflated without stretching the valve.  With the proper inflation, balloons will float longer. The Precision Plus Inflator automatically shuts off when the balloon is fully inflated, eliminating costly breakage. (See page 170 of BWI's Balloon Solutions Catalog)

What is Ultra Hi-Float™?
Ultra Hi-Float™ is a water soluble plastic formulated to hold helium inside latex balloons. It can extend the float time by up to 10 times. (See page 171 of BWI's Balloon Solutions Catalog)

How does Ultra Hi-Float™ work?
Ultra Hi-Float™ dries inside the latex, creating a thin coating which seals the tiny pores that naturally occur in latex.

How much Ultra Hi-Float™ do I need for each balloon?
Each 11" latex ballon requires approximately a dime size drop of Ultra Hi-Float™. 96 ounces (approx. one gallon) will treat 540 11" latex balloons. BWI can provide more information on other sizes.
